Say it to me easy babe, I don’t wanna miss a letter.
Musically “Red” floats like a helicopter seed falling through a dream. It’s one of those songs I find myself pining for the advent of an anti-gravity dance hall.. Although weightless in instrumentation, the lyrics tug heavy at the heart. This song is the feeling of falling in love with someone who is not only mesmerizing by nature but also by the movement of their body.. And although this love was real, and I do mean real, it was short. Too short? Who’s to say? #tooshortbaby ;) But sometimes in life you take unexpected and drastic turns. Look, I never received my standard issue Haynes Repair Manual for an ‘86 Dath. I just fix the bastard as it perpetually falls apart.
Let’s talk about the percussion for a moment shall we? Darren, the freight train of a drummer we all know and love, shows his sweet side on this one. At about 2:40 Darren doesn’t quite drop the sticks but he does whip out the ol’ mitts and go to town on a pair of congas that he seems to have effortlessly laid over the top of the kit. I really wish we did this live, maybe we’ll have to start. GROW MORE ARMS D!
And let’s tip our collective hat to Mr. Ryan Arnold for stacking two of the tastiest guitar solos of the album only moments apart on “Red”. Damn Ryan, your work on this album is second to none.
It was an absolute pleasure working with bassist Nate Simpson on this track (as well as 5 others on MONOLITHS). Nate is truly a phenomenal player and groove resonates outward from the marrow in his bones. He also happens to be a very dear friend to both Darren and I. Big love to you Nate.
Layin' it down on the synthetic ivory teeth of the B3, the juicey smooth stylin's of our homie JD Rouillard of Swantourage.
Darren and I truly want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for sharing our music, giving us incredibly positive feedback, pre-ordering the album, buying our new merch and donating your time and money to Crook & The Bluff.
I want you all to know that every last nickel we make goes straight back into this project. Whether the money goes to rent at our rehearsal space, band bills, tracking new songs in studio, orders of merch, or music videos - everything propels us forward one inch at a time. In fact we’ve recently hired someone as a consultant to help push Crook & The Bluff further along because as we believe in this album.
As always, It’s been an honor to ride shotgun with you on your untamed and strangest adventures.
